He passed away on November 5, 1956 but, on evidence of these performances, he was stl playing pretty well near the end of his life. Tatum is heard on the third of his three broadcasts on Steve Allen's Tonight Show and on five rao programs. In three cases he is joined by guitarist Everett Barksdale and bassist Slam Stewart, two of the airchecks have Bl Pemberton in Stewart's place and there are also three unaccompanied solos. There are not any revelations to be heard and, compared to Tatum's many other recorngs, this set is not essential. But pick it up anyway, for Art Tatum stl plays quite brliantly whe always keeping the melody close by. ~ Scott Yanow
