Happy Rhythm: New York Columbia Recordings, Vol. 1 (Frog) ? (2000) by Various Artists Happy Rhythm compes a raft of performances from eight New York jazz bands of the late '20s and early '30s, most never heard on before (and a few not on LP either). Best known are Leroy Tibbs & His Connie's Inn Orchestra and Andy Preer and the Cotton Club Orchestra; the latter was resident band at the famous club from 1923 to 1927, unt Preer's death catapulted a certain Duke Ellington into the high-profe gig. There's plenty of hot jazz in the New York mold: happy, carefree, rather more tied to Manhattan's society bands than the blues feeling of the New Orleans or Chicago groups. Highlights include "One O'Clock Blues" by Leroy Tibbs, "Snag 'Em Blues" by the Cotton Club Orchestra, and "Happy Rhythm" from the Musical Stevedores. ~ John Bush, Rovi Hide CONDITIONI MINT E' COME NUOVO
