The earlier set is of particular interest due to the occasional vocals of Clancy Hayes and Lizzie Mes, plus plenty of heated ensembles and fine solo work from Scobey, clarinetist Bl Napier and trombonist Bob Short. Highlights include "My Honey's Loving Arms," "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," "I'll See You In C.U.B.A." and "Panama Rag." The later session also finds Scobey in fine form, and even if trombonist Richard Nelson is sometimes a bit corny (particularly on his feature "Basin Street Blues"), the band shows plenty of spirit.
